Sonix from VVModel

New F3B model Sonix from VV Model is at home. It’s successor of Stinger. Wingspan 3090mm, different airfoil, higher aspect ratio, alternative dihedral (two wing joiners), longer arm wing/tail, new inner structure of fuselage (stiffer), fuselage with cabin (no nosecone).

There will be also new F3F model; Sonet. Shorter wingspan 2950mm, different airfoil (faster), shorter fuselage. Comparing to Sonix (F3B) there will be only same V-tail, otherwise completely different model.

Gator West 2015

Gators from Florida are moving to West Coast (RCG thread). Already several years is F3B FAI WorldCup season starting in USA. Next year we begin in California, brand new experience supported by strong F3B community there. Don’t hesitate and book flights to LA.

My debts

Took me some time to digest end of this F3B season, nevertheless debts should be paid. May look strange to talk about contests after more than three months, but I make notes, logs and comments from every flying day, therefore shouldn’t be so big issue for me.

F3B Mlada Boleslav

Deadly hot&no wind contest. If there was some wind it was exactly crosswind direction. We were flying mostly 1.12 MegaLine and some bigger winch drum diameters (55-60mm). My 2-nd Pike Perfection was just one month old. I was permanently searching some setup for this dead air conditions.

When I look at my notes, I was flying distance mostly 2600-2700g. That’s really not much. For speed was Pike ballasted about 3000-3200g(once) maximum (also not so much).

Funny was 1-st speed round. Only one Austrian pilot got huge thermal and was flying 13.xx. Until that moment everybody who was bellow 18.xx was king of the road. You can see my log; I was launching twice…

speedx

Flying speed from 190m is never big fun. Just imagine that there is proposal to shorten F3B line to 150m; not good idea. Pike Perfection 3000g, CG+2.5g, variable, time 17.15sec

Binningen’s carnage

It’s quite long trip from Prague to Binningen, at least at Central European standards (7 hours one way). Weather forecast was a bit unsure but reality was even worse.

When we came Friday to airfield just after winch setup really heavy rain started. We had big pools in tent and also on airfiled until Sunday and another strong rain was accompanying us on the way back to Prague. Some cars had to be pulled by tractor from airfield when leaving Sunday afternoon.

Wind and weather conditions where a bit tricky; mostly variable or very light wind (Saturday) and in Sunday final speed in rain-for somebody.

For many top pilots this event was carnage. I don’t know if order is correct or even complete, but…

Andreas Boehlen-crashed model on speed-zero
Martin Herrig-damaged model after speed relaunch (mistake of helper when trying to catch the model)-zero
Jiri Baudis-drown model on distance (yes, some model were landing in stream which is just few meters from landing path)-zero in next task (it was reasonable from Jiri not to fly completely sunken model)
Daniele Amici-troubles with wing/fuse connector-zero
At least one models totally damaged after water landing and following launch, bugger!

Should I continue?

Anyhow for me contest was OK, I brought home complete and ready to fly my Pike and that’s enough (smiling). When watching my duration logs I found a bit unexpected experience. Late afternoon Saturday Duration on sink about -0,5m/s and Sunday morning Duration -0,25m/s. My experience says it’s usually vice versa, but Binningen is really hard core lesson (wink)

Duration; Green line-Saturday late afternoon, Red line-Sunday morning

I’d like to express big thanks to Rudi Schaub and his orchestra. They were in complicated position but always doing the best. It’s question if F3B Binningen will be held next year (officials shortage)

Take care and see you this weekend nearby Mlada Boleslav.

Mlada Boleslav Cup 2014 (updated Sept. 10)

Updated Sept.10

2.MB.Cup-2014-RESULTS (PDF) and few pictures

The 2.MB Cup 2014 takes place at a brand new airfield with no flying limits for the competitors!

Dear competitors,
as we wanted to prepare the best conditions for a perfect competition, we managed to ensure an ideal airfield completely distant from any buildings and with no other air traffic! It is a private airfield Loucen which is about 20 km southeast of Mlada Boleslav. This 200×600 m airfield is ideal for an F3B competiton. No highways, nothing, just us and peace. Camping allowed free on the airfield.

GPS: 50.2813225°N, 15.0615036°E

Registration is now available until 29.August! Training possible on Friday from 2 PM already.

Pike Precision LDS and some other details

I had chance to make some detailed pictures of my crashed F3B Pike Precision. Maybe can help somebody. Some raw data:

  • I’m using Jeti DC-16 transmitter, Jeti R9 receiver and also LOLO5+ altitude logger.
  • I used 2S LiIon HighLoad (20A) 2000mAh Samsung 18650 (PDF) cells and Mag- magnetic switch.
  • For CG 106-107mm about 60g lead in nose and about 30g extra nearby receiver to modify CG appropriately.
  • In new (very thin) Samba fuselage are installed servos JR DS3425HV, wing servos JR DS189HV
  • In wing new LDS system Samba/MP Jet. Arm on flap 6.2mm, arm on servo 5mm. You can replace servo on the field within few seconds.

1.32 F3B parties

Last three F3B WorlCup contest were quite windy. We were using mostly 1.32 MegaLine. I have in mind Nardt (GER), Jesenik (CZE) and Athisnes (BEL). It’s always pleasant if you don’t have to care too much about your launch setup because you have good altitude anyhow. BTW in Athisnes we were using also 1.5ML (thanks Reinhard and Thomas Dylla); I didn’t even know there is such thick rope (smiling). Now just very briefly:

Nardt

  • Sunny, stormy and windy weather
  • 2 days before contest setting up borrowed Fosa Lift (thanks Honza)
  • Interesting experience
  • Amazing launch and speed performance, but could be masked by windy/easy conditions

Jesenik

  • Quite cold and windy weather
  • Duration was for many pilots disaster; not easy to fly 10 minutes
  • 2 days (Thursday) before contest I finished my new Pike Precision. New shockingly thin and nose short fuselage. Also brand new LDS system in wing installed (Samba&MP Jet cooperation). I was so in hurry I didn’t make not even one picture.
  • Friday first training flights and Saturday morning first contest flights
  • I was really surprised by performance of this model and also by pleasant and mild flight characteristics

Anthisnes

  • Sunny, stormy and windy weather. SpeedCup was not so windy (about 1-2m/s/90°sidewind)
  • Good training on SpeedCup (thank you Denis)
  • Winner Martin Herrig with average 13.77sec (5 from 6), crazy…
  • I had 14.33 with my 8 days old Pike
  • Jan (Honza) Kohout flying 12.56 in regular contest with his Pike. Fastest speed time flown out of USA? (Dave Klein, Florida Gator2013 11.90) I’m happy to witness both these flights.
  • Last duration and my Pike was completely damaged in zoom midair. Half of wing never found. Bugger…!
  • Denis Duchesne (CD) was trying old-new distance model launch logistics using color flags (also confirmed by walkie/talkie). Not so bad idea, interesting. At least lessens CD/starter mind load when allowing and announcing launched models. Also gives pilots a bit more free space to decide when to launch.
  • CRPAL has new airport base-house. We could only envy such nice building.
